Obituary

Richard Chappell McIlwaine was born August 20, 1965 in Charlotte NC at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. He was the only son to Rose McIlwaine Gleaton and his father is Richard Hopkins. Richard graduated from Harding University High School and later enlisted into the United States Army where he dedicated 7 years of his life serving our country. Richard had the opportunity to serve in Hawaii and Campbell County Kentucky, he Ranked as a 4th class Specialist during his time in the Army.

Richard was an employee of Allied Barton for the Charlotte transit and light rail (CATS). He was a devoted member of Saint Luke Missionary Baptist church where he often volunteered his time and his security experience to protect the church grounds. Richard was known to have the best card games at his home, and he loved to see all his friends together.

Richard was a caring, nurturing man who never meet a stranger, he never passed judgement and often saw the best in everyone. He was known for his uncandid way of bringing a breath of fresh air to any situation in the form of comic relief. He often told everyone how much he loved them and never complained about anything in his life. Many knew Richard as a comedian, card player, loyal "Panthers" fan, caretaker, friend, nephew and cousin however he was most noted for being a beloved son that loved his mother dearly.

Richard transitioned out of his earthly body on November 6, 2019 at his mother's residence surrounded by his family and loved ones. Richard leaves behind to forever cherish his memories his beautiful mother Rose Gleaton (Walt), father Richard Rowe Hopkins Sr. (Madge), son Alto Wallace, Sisters Lena Hopkins Jackson (David), Yolanda Marion (John), and Portia Hinson, Brother Richard Rowe Hopkins Jr. (Michelle), his aunts Bobby McDowell, Brenda Burson (Tim) Velma Douglas, Roxie English, Evelyn Williams as well as one uncle Charlie Hopkins. Richard will also be missed by a host of cousins and friends.

Richard was proceeded in death by his uncles James McIlwaine, Oscar McIlwaine, his aunts Laxie Black, Daisy Minger, Lucille Sings, and his cousins Gary Black, Angela Black and Virginia Boston.
