Obituary

Saint Rosa Walker Donald, 100 of Charlotte, passed away on July 31, 2020 at Charlotte Square Assisted Living. She was born to the late Lula Reid Walker and John Walker on August 18, 1919 in Mathews, North Carolina.  As the oldest of 4 children, she loved to go the the House of Prayer.  As a little girl, her mother would not allow her to attend service there because she did not have decent shoes to wear.  She convinced her mother that other children did not have shoes either  Her mother then gave her permission to attend the services.

Saint Donald joined the House of Prayer in 1926 on Long Street in the Brooklyn community of Charlotte under Daddy Grace.  She received the Holy Ghost and Fire years later.  During her lifetime, she was blessed to serve under four Bishops (Daddy Grace, Daddy McCullough, Daddy Madison and Daddy Bailey).  Prior to 1940, students were required to complete eleven years to graduation from high school. In 1940 the requirement for graduation adopted by Charlotte schools changed to twelve years.  Therefore, Saint Donald's Second Ward High School class of 1941 was the first to finish according to the new guidelines.  Second Ward High School was where she obtained her passion for sewing and tailoring.  She did alterations at Barry Manufacturing, a men's clothing store.  Before she retired from there, she was making men's suits.  Once she retired, some of her customers from Barry's came to her house for alterations.

Saint Donald was a faithful member of the Senior Nurses for more than 50 years under the leadership of the late Sister Vera Ford.  She was a G Class worker and a tither.  The Senior Nurses would volunteer to work in the Charlotte Mother House cafeteria for three months during the year.  Saint Donald enjoyed and diligently worked as one of the cooks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Donald; son, Willie Peterson, Jr.; and her grandson, Shomari K. Lewis.  She was also predeceased by her 3 siblings: James Walker Sr., Virginia Walker and St. Eva Mae Parker.

Saint Donald leaves to cherish, one daughter, Rhonda Lewis (Richard); two grandsons, Darryl Funderburk and Omar Lewis; two great granddaughters, Mercedes Funderburk and Jhuri Lewis; brother-in-law, Grady Parker; one aunt, Ira Bell Ray (her father's sister); two cousins, Violet Cook of Washington, DC and Martha Ray of Charlotte, NC; 17 nieces and nephews; 46 great nieces and nephews; and 20 great-great nieces and nephews.
