Obituary

Mrs. Ruby Flax, 100, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Atrium Health Main.

Mrs. Ruby Reid Flax was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 10, 1924, to Adolphus and Sarah Reid.  She celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this year at Ebenezer Church, surrounded by her family, her church family and many friends.  Sister Flax accepted the call of Christ to enter eternal life on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, while at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center Main in Charlotte.

Mrs. Flax was married to William James Flax in 1946; they were blessed with seven children.  As a homemaker, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who established and maintained a home full of love.  She enjoyed bird watching, growing flowers, gardening, and doing ceramics.  Always "decked out," Mrs. Flax was a sharp dresser from head to toe.

She graduated from Plato Price School in 1942, never having missed a day of school.  In October 1976, she attended Central Piedmont Community College and proudly earned her certification in Early Childhood Education and Development.  She worked for Kress Department Store, and she especially enjoyed her work with children at Phillips Day Care and Wonderland Day Care.  She was also a volunteer nurse at Ranson Junior High School.

As a devoted member of Ebenezer Church for over 70 years, she was active in her church serving as an usher, a member of the choir, secretary for Missionary Group #5, and Sunday School teacher.  She was voted Mother of the Year on May 11, 1977.  She enjoyed taking trips with her Senior Citizens Group.  Mrs. Flax regularly attended Ebenezer until just recently.

Mrs. Flax was preceded in death by her husband, William Flax, Sr.; two children, Frances Dunlap and William Flax, Jr.; three sisters, Ella Evans, Peggy Brown, and Julia Wilson; and one brother, Adolphus Reid, Jr.

She is survived by three sons, Reuben Flax, Warren Flax and Gregory Flax, Sr. (Bonnie); two daughters, Jane Flax and Sarah Flax Alexander; 12 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Naomi Swann; and a host of other relatives and friends.
