Mr. Samuel Woodrow Grier Jr., 74, of Charlotte, NC departed this life on Monday, August 21, 2023, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.
Samuel Woodrow Grier, Jr., "Sam", departed this life on Monday, August 21, 2023, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife, Karen B. Grier; his children, Samuel Woodrow Grier, III, Michael Grier, Marlene Watson, Bernard Watson, Adrian Blalock, Samantha Grier, Dominiqua Grier and Davrion Grier; and seven grandchildren.
Samuel Grier was born on March 7, 1949, in Charlotte, NC. He was born to a big family that totaled eleven children. His surviving siblings are Juanita Cunningham (Lewis), Ray Grier, Vivian Chambers, Jerome Grier, Vickie Grier and Karen Grier. Sam is predeceased by his father, Samuel Woodrow Grier Sr.; his mother, Beatrice Pagan; his brothers, Calvin Pagan and James Pagan; and his sisters, Martha Bell and Thomasina Horne.
Samuel attended Garinger High School and graduated in 1967. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969. He served as a medic in the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged in 1971. He continued his education at Central Piedmont Community College, obtaining an associate degree in Commercial Art and Real Estate.
Samuel started his life of hard work at Consolidated Engravers as an Electroplater in 1972 until 1974. He then obtained a position as Assistant Draftsman for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Commission from 1976 to 1978. Samuel began his career with Duke Energy formerly Duke Power in 1979. He held his position as Assistant Designer until his departure in 1988. Samuel worked at a mapping company for some time until 1993 when he obtained his final employment with Kurz Transfer Products until, his retirement in 2012.
Sam was a long time Oakland Raiders fan and professional wrestling fan. He enjoyed jogging, reading, writing and photography. Samuel was also a longtime member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was active in several church functions throughout the years.
Samuel was a witty, intelligent, artistic, honest and reliable individual. He was known and respected by many throughout his community. He was always timely, precise and proficient. Sam leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication. He will be missed dearly by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and loving him.
