Sando Tumah Johnson, Sr. was born on November 21, 1953 in Harbel, Firestone area, in Liberia, West Africa. He was born as a surviving twin and the oldest child of five children to Safula and Arthur D. Johnson of Fefeh Town, Liberia. Sando's father, predeceased him at an early age. Sando became the head of the household at a young age for his mother, his brother Boima Johnson, and sister Konah Johnson, a surviving twin herself. He tragically lost his brother in the civil war in Liberia and his sister to breast cancer while she was in her twenties. He dedicated is life to caring for his beloved mother, Ma Safula well into her old age and was her pride and joy until she departed this earth in 2008.
As a young man, Sando attended Ricks Institute in Virginia, Liberia from 1968 to 1973, where he received early education through high school. At Ricks, he formed bonds with friends that would last his lifetime. Sando later attended the University of Liberia in Monrovia and in 1977 earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management. He began his career as a Sales Manager for the Liberia Tractor Equipment of his career making him a sar in his field, so much of a start that he was sponsored by his company to continue his higher education in the United States at Thunderbird. the American Graduate School of International Management located in Glendale, Arizona.
In 1981, he earned his Master of Business Administration in International Management and returned to LIBRACO. Sando quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Managing Director of all operations in just six years. His friendly personality and keen business acumen would take Sando on a successful career of international sales and business development. Specializing in heavy equipment with companies like Caterpillar, Bladerson, and DOMEX traveling throughout Africa, Europe, and North America. With is knowledge, success, and extensive global network, it was no doubt that in 2004 Sando became an executive leader for the remainder of his career, becoming President and CEO of his own companies, Continental Machinery, and Support Services and Transcontinental Machinery, Inc.
Through his philanthropic efforts, he ensured to give back to the country and community that meant so much to him by founding the Safula Endowment Fund a non-governmental, non-political, and not for profit organization established and dedicated to supporting the education of young underprivileged Liberian children, in his mother's hometown of Fefeh town, Bomi County. The current chairman for a better and brighter future through the provision of quality education under the Endowment fund's educational developments pillars.
Sando's career was a big part of who he was but ultimately his love of family and friends were the defining characteristic of his life. He was affectionately known as "Big Sando" and "Uncle Sando" to many was fun-loving. He loved African music, dancing entertaining, laughing, and telling jokes. One of his favorite sayings known to the Liberian community in Milwaukee is baby food is baby food."
To his children, he was lovingly known as "Deddeh" , a source of pride for him. Sando became a father of seven children. Arthur Johnson (Christina) Johnson, his eldest, Sando Johnson, Jr., Sandi Johnson, Maryann Hoff (Tyrell Hoff), Greeta Johnson, Azee Johnson, and J. Rudolph Johnson. Sando's greatest joy was found later in life in the enjoyment of being a grandfather and seeing the lives of his children develop and grow. He is survived by his children and grandchildren Starlett, Ariella, Astrid, and Arden. He will be missed by his close family and relatives, Uncles Armah Johnson of California, Kaleo Johnson, and Asanu Johnson of Fefe Town Liberia. Cousins Sata Johnson, Carnley Johnson, Edwin Johnson, Hawa Boke, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family members, and wonderful friends.
Sando early in life accepted the Lord as his Savior and was one of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the church pastored by Reverend Charles H. Jones, Area Director for Europe, Middle East, and Liberia for the American Baptist International Ministries.
Sando was called home by his Lord and Savior at the University Atrium Hospital in the early morning of Wednesday, April 19, 2023 in Charlotte North Carolina May he continue to laugh and dance in a happy reunion with his loved ones and rest in perfect peace until we meet again.
