Sarah Virginia Redfern, age 92, was born September 1, 1929, in Jefferson, South Carolina to the late Oree and Laura Truesdale. She departed this life on Monday, January 10, 2022, at Atrium Health Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Sarah was preceded in death by her son, Drayton Paul Ashford.
Sarah was educated in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1949, "Home of the Lions". She joined the AME Zion "Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society" as a lifetime member.
She met her husband, Thomas H. Redfern at Mercy Hospital in 1968, where they both worked for more than 30 years and retired together. During that time, they were married and have been together for more than 53 years. Their dedication has been to their family, grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Sarah, the matriarch of the family, was blessed to see four generations of her family. She leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband, Thomas H. Redfern; two daughters, Alfreda A. Nixon, Minnie A. Ashford-Hardy; two sons, Willie J. Ashford, Jr., Gary Davis (Patricia); twenty-two grandchildren, fifty-three great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great grandchildren; two Truesdale family members, Audrey D. Truesdale (nephew), Ericka E. Gibson (great-niece); one special family caregiver, Dontressa C. Ashford, three god-children, Judy K. Williams, Paula R. Howard, Janice Smith; and a host of family and friends.
Sarah Virginia Redfern was a woman of integrity and wisdom. She often reminded the family of how important it is to be there for one another.
