Shelvy Jean Gaddy Hayes, 71 of Charlotte, departed this life and entered eternal rest on Friday, January 08, 2021 at Novant Health-Main. She was born December 18, 1949 in Lumberton, North Carolina to the late Ervin Gaddy and Geneva Gaddy. Shelvy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Hayes; four brothers, Jerry Gaddy, Gene Gaddy, Earl Gaddy, and Milton Gaddy; and one grandson, Chancellor Hayes.
Shelvy graduated from Rosenwald High School in Lumberton, North Carolina. She attended Ruthledge College and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina. Shelvy worked at IBM and Solectron Technologies. She had the pleasure of retiring from Phillip Morris and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
Shelvy made a confession of faith and gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of St. Paul Baptist Church for many years. She loved listening to her gospel music. Those who spent time with Shelvy knew she loved her children and grandchildren. She had a natural since of humor that brought a smile to everyone's face. Special memories are singing with her siblings, eating fried fish, cornbread, and collard greens on the weekends, attending her grandchildren's basketball games, and gathering with the family for birthday luncheons. Everyone loved Shelvy's cooking. She was the only person who could cook food that tasted like a five-star meal, yet she only used salt and pepper and a lot of love.
Shelvy is survived by two daughters, Charlene Hayes Barnett (Cedric), Vickie Lynn Collins (Cory); two sons, Charles Edward Hayes, Jr., and Antoine Eric Hayes; ten grandchildren, Damorio Belton, DeShaun Hayes, Devin Hayes, Onesti Barnett, Tanajah Hayes, Leah Hayes, Antoine Hayes, Jr., Amora Collins, Jayden Collins and Brayden Collins; three sisters, Etheline Powell (Lynn), Betty Rose Gaddy, Linzeter Gaddy; two brothers, Jimmie Gaddy (Sally) and Phillip Gaddy, all of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives, and friends. Shelvy is loved by so many people! She will truly be missed.
