Spencer graduated from the former York Road High School in Charlotte.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was recognized for his Vietnam War service and sharpshooter skills.  Spencer went on to receive an Associate Degree from Central Piedmont Community College and a Bachelor Degree in Personnel Management from Sacred Heart College in Belmont, NC.

Spencer's professional career was dedicated to the United States Postal Service where he served for 35 years.  His various positions included Mail Carrier Supervisor, Station Manager, Operations Manager of 327 Post Offices and Postmaster of Kannapolis and Concord.

Through the years, Spencer served on the Barber-Scotia College Trustee Board, Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee and Mecklenburg County Human Resources Committee.  More recently, he was an active member of the Charlotte Golfing Seniors, Hidden Valley Optimist Club, Charlotte Chapter of Epicureans and the Charlotte Chapter of Boyfriends, Inc.  He also was an active member of the First Baptist Church-West where he served on the Human Resources Committee, the Board of Directors and Church Security Team. His longtime Board service included Charlotte Community Services Association and the NC Small Business Contractor Authority.  Spencer also was active in local political efforts and often volunteered as  campaign manager or advisor to some of Charlotte's leading politicians.

Spencer was a devoted and loving husband of 45 years and a proud father of three children.  He was a hard-working and dedicated man who brought laughter to everyone he met and every meeting he attended.  He and his wife Patrice enjoyed participating in social, civic and church events together, as well as traveling with friends, eating out together or hosting family.

Spencer proceeded in death by his mother Mary Belle Thompson, father Andrew Jackson and sister Curlee Pettis.

Those left to cherish his fond memories are his wife Patrice and three children Marian Shavonne (Atlanta), Spencer Jr. (Winston-Salem) and Christina (Charlotte).  He also leaves behind a beloved granddaughter Emery Thompson and a special grandnephew Easton Hendricks.  Other survivors include sisters-in-law Earlena Mackey and Mary McCray (both of Charlotte) and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
