Stella Mae Singleton McGill was born March 6, 1932 in Clemson, SC. She was the oldest child born to the late Leslie and Stella Williams Singleton. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, Margaret S. Dulin, Susie S. Douglas, Leslie Singleton, Jr., Hosie Singleton, Charles Singleton and Bobby Singleton.
Mrs. McGill's family moved to Charlotte in the early 1940's. In 1952, she graduated from Clear Creek High School, later named J.H. Gunn High School. She was married to John Thomas McGill on January 3, 1954 and to that union, four sons and one daughter were born. After the death of her husband on October 28, 1982, Mrs. McGill remained a faithful mother and was the glue that held her family together for the remainder of her life.
She began her Christian journey early in life by joining New Hope Baptist Church in Clemson, SC, later joining Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte. She was dedicated to her relationship with God and wanted all to be saved and make Jesus their choice. She demonstrated her love for God by serving Antioch in the following ministries: The Missionary Circle, the Chancellor Choir, the Deaconess Ministry and the Trustee Ministry. Mrs. McGill was the first female Trustee to serve Antioch. Under the late Pastor Preston Pendergrass, her family received the "Family of the Year" Award in 1972. In 1978, she was awarded "Woman of the Year" at her church.
Mrs. McGill retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System's Independence High School where she had taken the opportunity to touch numerous young lives, encourage many students and staff members.
After a long and beautiful life, Mrs. McGill entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 9, 2016 as she was surrounded by loving family, caregivers and friends. In addition to her husband, she joined her son, John Leslie McGill, grandson JaRon Kentrell McGill, and stepson, McDonald Flowe in eternal rest.
Mrs. McGill 's legacy is her family. Left to celebrate her life are her devoted children, Clarethia M. Love, Wayne T. McGill (Annette), James Kenneth McGill (Jackie) and Minister Jeffery Q. McGill (Lisa); daughter-in-law, Gloria T. McGill; thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Elezer McGill and Clinton Douglas; six sisters-in-law; Katie McGill, Pearl McGill, Maggie McGill, Carolyn McGill, Betty Singleton and Eva Mae Singleton; her dearest friends and sisters-in-Christ, Mrs. Dorothy Lawson and Mrs. Elizabeth Grier (the three were affectionately know as "the Golden Girls") and a great host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Life and Love for Mrs. Stella Mae Singleton McGill will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Antioch Baptist Church. Family visitation will be 10:00- 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Garden.
