Susie May "Bubba Portlock was born November 8, 1932, in Pineville, NC
and departed her earthly life to be with our Lord on May 15, 2023. She was
the daughter of the late Thomas Long Sr. and the late Lillian Long.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Thornton Portlock, children,
David Culp, Andrea Culp, Doris Erwin and Jackie Bell, brothers, Fred Massey
and Roy Long, sisters, Lillian Stinson, Maggie Phillips and Lula Bell Holmes
and grandchildren George Erwin and Karl Mathis. Remaining to carry on
her legacy are her children Ronald Culp, Deborah Robinson, Theresa
Mathis, and Fred Culp (Beverly), siblings, Luvenia Smith, Grace Adams and
Reverend Marshall Long (Lizzie) and a host of grandchildren, great
grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren.
Susie May Portlock was educated in NC public schools and was a
longstanding member of Saint Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in Pineville, NC,
where she served as a Trustee and member of the Deaconess and
Missionary Boards. Susie worked as a certified nurse assistant at Charlotte
Memorial Hospital and Interim Healthcare before retiring after nearly thirty
years of serving homebound patients.
Susie May Portlock, "Bubba" as she was most affectionately called, was
grandmother to a host of grands, great grands, and great great grands
(way too many to count, we tried). Bubba had a servant's heart, she led
with love, had a quick wit and sense of humor, and loved to spend time
with family. Bubba's love of God, love of life and family, sense of resiliency
and her tenacity when facing a challenge are the foundations on which
those that know and love her stand.
Bubba will be greatly missed.
