Sylvia M. Garriett, 75, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. 

Ms. Sylvia M. Garriett, also known as Sylvia Ann Mobley, was born to the late Calvin C. Mobley and Thelma A. Mobley in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 16, 1950. She peacefully departed this life on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 2:38 a.m. at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House – Huntersville.

A native Charlottean, Sylvia was reared in a small community off South Tryon Street known as the “Brickyard.” She attended public school and would have graduated from Sterling High School in Pineville, an all-Black high school. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Sterling closed, and she was reassigned to South Mecklenburg High School, where she graduated in 1968. Just on the heels of segregation, Sylvia faced challenges that she confidently overcame, experiences that helped shape the strong, self-assured woman she became.

After graduating, Sylvia worked at various financial institutions in support, training, and supervisory roles at NCNB (Bank of America) and Wachovia, ultimately retiring from Wachovia (Wells Fargo) in 2009.

Her faith walk began at an early age at Greater Galilee Baptist Church, she was an active member, serving as a member of the musical choir, usher board, Girl Scout leader, and culinary team. In 2018, she became a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where she continued her walk of faith.

Sylvia had a deep love for cooking and was always eager to experiment with new dishes she discovered on cooking shows, often introducing her family to different flavors. She enjoyed watching westerns, planting flowers and vegetables, nurturing her home and wearing wide-brim hats. Above all, her greatest joy, the apple of her eye was her beloved granddaughter, Ashley.

Sylvia consistently sought ways to better herself and her family. In 1976, she took a bold step and initiated the purchase of a home in the Colony Acres community with her sister. As a devoted mother, she always wanted the very best for Melissa, often working a second job to pay for private voice lessons, fund vocal competition trips, and support any opportunity that would enrich her daughter’s life. Just days before her passing, Sylvia shared that she had lived a wonderful life, blessed with a fantastic daughter, a bright and beautiful granddaughter, an awesome son-in-law, and a sister who would be alright without her. She expressed peace in knowing that everyone would be okay and that she was going to Heaven.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin C. Mobley and Thelma A. Mobley, and her brother-in-law, Clarence W. Wall.

She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories her daughter, Melissa M. Mark (Philip); her granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Mark; her sister, Millicent M. Wall, all of Charlotte, NC; special family friend, Frances P. Mark, of Charlotte, NC; sister/friend, Alma D. Moore, of Raleigh, NC; close friend of many years, Rose Truesdale, of Charlotte, NC; along with a host of relatives and friends.
