Obituary

Thelma Elizabeth Barnette Taylor, 96 of Charlotte, passed away on Friday, December 04, 2020 at The Parc at Sharon Amity.  She was born October 27, 1924 to William and Tetsie Thompson Barnette.  She was the youngest of six children.  Siblings Rosa Lee Barnette Bingman, Roscoe Barnette, Rev. James W. Barnette, Evelyn Barnette Camp and Hariette Ann Barnette Morrow all proceeded her in death.  She was baptized at Lawrence Chapel Presbyterian Church (H.O. Graham) as a small child and remained a member until her death.

"Miss Thelma," as she was called by everyone, attended Sterling School.  After graduation she went on to build bombs at the Shell Plant for the World War II war effort.  This is where she met a handsome young sailor man named George Mack Taylor.  They were married in 1946.  Miss Thelma had three children, Bryon George Taylor (deceased), Angela Taylor Hames and Darryl Eugene Taylor.

To say Miss Thelma lead a full life would be an understatement.  She once said that she had seen everything from horse and buggies, the introduction of cars, sitting at the back of the bus to integration. She witnessed the man walking on the moon and the first Black President whom she loved and prayed for daily.  Miss Thelma was the first Team Mom and helped to establish the Pineville Little League Association.  Her flower beds looked as if they could have been in a magazine and won several awards from the Charlotte Housing Authority.  She was an eighty-year-old with frequent flyer miles and a couple of sets of luggage.  She flew and she cruised. Her cooking could put many professional chefs to shame.  Everyone who knew her loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Angela Taylor Hames; one son Darryl E. Taylor; three granddaughters, Kimberly Chevers (Richard), Venicia Hames and Kiara Hames; two great-grandchildren, Tashawn Taylor and Logan Laws-Taylor; one step-grandson and "fishing buddy," Terry Withers; and a host of other relatives and friends.
