Mr. Thomas Albert Sturdivant, 79 of Charlotte, affectionately known as "Sonny" or "Tom", entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Peak Resources Charlotte. He was born May 25, 1941 in Morven, North Carolina to the late Tom and Julia L. Sturdivant.
Thomas was educate in the Anson County School System and a 1960 graduate of McRae High School. He went on to further his education at Barber School.
On November 17, 1963, Thomas married his sweetheart Mary Ruth Sellers in Ruby, South Carolina. Later, they moved to Charlotte, NC. Thomas joined the Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC over 40 years ago after the church moved to its current location on West Boulevard.
He started his barber career at Taylor's Barber Shop in 1965. Thomas loved his work as a barber. Later, he decided to take a leap of faith and purchased an old club in the same area of the shopping center. He transformed the building into a barbershop. Thomas opened Tom's Barber & Styling Shop in 1984. He took great pride in the shop, his barbers, the beauticians, and in supporting his family with a black-owned business in West Charlotte. He was dearly loved by fellow business owners, the community, and many friends.
Thomas was preceded in death by one brother, John Sturdivant; two sisters, Carrie Carson and Shirley Watkins; and one daughter, Angela T. Sturdivant.
He will forever be remembered by his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary R. Sturdivant; loving sister Katie M. Gibson; children, Amanda S. Robinson of Charlotte NC, and Amber A. Sturdivant (Richard Jackson) of Columbia, MD; grandchildren, Thomas E. Sturdivant, Richard C. Robinson, Jr., Alexis E. Sturdivant, Robert H. Crosby, Jr., Ivory R. Crosby and Annabelle L. Quick of Charlotte, NC; one brother-in-law, David L. Sellers of Columbia, SC; one sister-in-law, Betty Sellers of Snellville, GA; Melvin Robinson, Peak Resources roommate; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
