Obituary

Thomasena E. Williams was born on January 22, 1936 in Simpsonville, SC. She passed away peacefully on October 5, 2020.

Thomasena and her twin were the fourth children born to Wilmer Evans, Sr. and Corrie Young Evans. She left South Carolina at 15 years old and moved to Detroit, Michigan to live with her older sister Sudie. Thomasena graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan in June, 1955.

In 1958, Thomasena moved to Charlotte and started working at W. T. Grants Department Store. In 1960, she was introduced to the love of her life Artis Williams. Their relationship blossomed and they were united in marriage on February 28, 1961; and to this union were born three children, Sandra Gail, Jacqueline and Artis Redell.

Thomasena retired from Piedmont Natural Gas after 18 years of service. She was a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, serving on Missionary Group #4. She was the epitome of motherhood. Thomasena made her family her priority, often times attending concerts with her children (even when she didn't want to) because of the joy it gave her to see the look on their faces.

Thomasena was the cornerstone of the household and loved cooking for the family. Thomasena and Artis celebrated 59 years of marriage in February 28, 2020. Her love, sense of humor and wit will be dearly missed. We will cherish the wisdom and the life lessons she taught us. Her light will continue to shine through her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Sudie McPherson, Lydia Tyson, Maude Tomasson, Carolyn Jamison, Christine Byrd (twin sister), Dorothy Evans and oldest brother Elliott Evans. Thomasena is survived by sisters Mary Moore, Deborah Ellis (Henry) and Wilmer Evans, Jr.

Thomasena was preceded in death by her loving husband, Artis Williams. Left to cherish her memory are her three devoted children: Sandra Williams Powers of Charlotte, NC; Jacqueline Williams Murphy (Octavius) of Goldsboro, NC; Artis Redell Williams (Pamela) of Waldorf, MD; three wonderful grandchildren Courtney Wiliams, Artis Williams Jr., and Candis Williams of Waldorf, MD.; special sisters-in-law, Clora Williams of Blounts Creek, NC and Lena Myers of Chocowinity, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.
