Valorie Ramseur McCullough was born February 20, 1952 in Cleveland County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Hilliard Douglas Ramseur and Geneva Borders Ramseur. Valorie peacefully entered eternal rest on Tuesday morning, July 14, 2020, while at home.
Raised in the Washington Community of Waco, NC, Valorie grew up near many cousins and relatives. She was greatly influenced by her paternal grandfather, Earnest Ramseur, as she lived closer to him than his other grandchildren. Like her grandfather, Valorie was kind and well-loved by family and friends. During her childhood, she developed her love of reading. She attended Washington High School through the 9th grade and then transitioned to Burns High School where she graduated in the Class of 1970. In 1974, she graduated with at B.S. degree in Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill. She earned her Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from Atlanta University. Valorie did additional post graduate study at UNC-Greensboro. She also earned advanced certifications in Psychology specialties such as Brain Injury.
Valorie worked for more than 40 years in School Administration and counseling-first in Atlanta, Georgia for 2 years, then in Cleveland County, North Carolina for about 2 1/2 years and for the remainder of her professional career, she worked with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. For many years, Valorie was the CMS Assistant Superintendent of Student Services; she most recently was a school psychologist until her retirement.
As a young girl, Valorie accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. She was raised in Washington Missionary Baptist Church in Waco, NC. In 1980, she married James McCullough. It was then that she joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Coleman W. Kerry, Jr. She was a devoted member of the Jamaican Bible Study and Drama Ministry, which she most enjoyed and considered a great source of inspiration.
In her free time, Valorie enjoyed quilting which she learned from her mother. She had great love for family and friends. She was actively involved with her family reunion, the Roberts, Borders, Mauney, Howell, Briggs & Related Families Reunion, but her absolute most favorite thing to do was to travel the world to see all that God had made. She visited Egypt, Indonesia, Dubai, India, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Greece and Japan and most of the United States, all except Iowa, Oregon, Alaska and North Dakota.
Valorie leaves to cherish her memories her husband, James "Bob" McCullough; daughters, Lauren Ramseur McCullough of Charlotte and Angela McCullough Baxter (Spunky) of Mooresville, NC; two granddaughters, Alexis McCullough and Aaliyah Baxter; two aunts who were more like older sisters, Gwendolyn B. Robinson of Grayson, GA and Shirley Borders of Charlotte; devoted longtime friends, Donnie and Jo Hoover, Yvonne and Mike Evans, and Cheryl Watkins; and a host of cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
