Obituary

Wilbert Wayne Alexander, 82 of Charlotte, departed this life on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at his residence.  He was born February 18, 1940 in Charlotte, North Carolina to his parents Ruth Alexander and Joseph Sawyer.  He was raised in Mecklenburg County by his grandparents, Horace Alexander Sr. and Gertrude Hester Alexander.

Wilbert attended West Charlotte High School where he played on the basketball team as a guard.  He was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, serving as an Altar Boy/Usher; he continued to be a dedicated member throughout his life.  Wilbert sought out to honorably provide for himself and his family in the fields of delivery, hospitality, and industrial companies for over 50 years.

While living in Charlotte, he met the love of his life, Grace Mae Bell Alexander, whom he took in marriage.  They were married for over 58 years until she passed away in February 2018.

Wilbert will be remembered as a devout Catholic, an upright man. heroic father figure, family man, hard worker, and a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan who deeply loved his family, faith, community and friends.  Wilbert was also known for his specialty homemade ice cream at cookouts and family events.  He would create great conversations with anyone he met and shared a lot of wisdom.  He truly enjoyed his wife's cooking along with her baked sweets.  He lived a content life wanting for nothing but the best for himself, family and others.  He always kept things neat and well stocked, especially Kristy Kreme and Canada Dry Ginger Ale, his favorites.  He would always say he lived a great life, that he had been blessed and had served his purpose in life with honor and dignity.

In addition to his wife, Grace, and his parents, Ruth and Joseph, Wilbert was preceded in death by two brothers, Gregory and Alfonzo; his uncle, Horace, Jr.; his aunts, Thelma, Sibyle, and Dorothy; his children, Loretta, Odell and Donald; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Evelyn; and a host of cousins and other relatives.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Junior; sisters-in-law, Willie, Ruth and Barbara Jean; his children, Timothy, Patricia and Robert; his grandchildren, Najee, Maia, Benjamin, Tony, David, Ayesha and Donald, Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Kahlayah, Kah'mari, Jamarion, Jordan, Leo, Dajsha, Alisa, Nadia, Nikia, Camren, Nate, True, Chye, and Roman.  He also leaves a host of other great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends to cherish his memories forever.
