Mr. William Hoey, 91 of Charlotte, NC., departed this life on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at his residence.
On Thursday, March 16, 2023, William Otto Hoey, Sr., "Bill", 91, of Charlotte, was called on his heavenly journey. He was born March 28, 1931, in Charlotte, North Carolina and was the son of the late Taylor and Dorothy Franklin Hoey. Bill was affectionately known as "Snooky" and "Sarg".
Bill grew up in the Second Ward community. During his time at Second Ward, Bill was part of the state champion track team. He took pride in his time as a student of Second Ward. After Second Ward, Bill also received an Associate in Applied Science for Law Enforcement from Central Piedmont Community College. Many don't know that Bill was a lead singer in a band! Bill served proudly as a Master Sargent for the Air Force for 20 plus years. His military time enabled him to live in Greece, The Philippines, Hawaii, England, and Spain before moving back to Charlotte.
After serving in the Air Force, Bill worked for the U. S. Postal Service. Bill also enjoyed working with the 7th Street Detox Center. He took pride in working with juveniles that were wards of the state providing enriching experiences. Bill was a pioneer in initiating the Pre-Trial Release Program for Mecklenburg County. He was a founding member of the Par Busters Golf group and the Duke's Social Club. Bill was respected for his expertise and asked to serve as an advisor for Governor James Martin. Governor Martin awarded him the Order of the Long Leaf Pine July 16, 1992. This was the highest award of state service granted by the office of the Governor.
In his free time, Bill was a sports fanatic! He enjoyed attending football games as the Bank of America Stadium and watching Sunday football, golf tournaments, and basketball games. Bill was an avid golfer! His golf buddies knew him as a reigning champion on the golf course!
Bill was a true entrepreneur. His many businesses included a furniture store, a motel, a florist, an ice cream parlor, a wine and cheese shop, the first black owned night club called the 19th Hole Social Club, the Hidden Valley Country Club, and part owner of the Grier Town Shopping Center. Bill's most beloved business was his car dealership which he owned for over 30 years. The car dealership was an extension of his love of cars! Bill was a man of many accomplishments, but the greatest one was he accepted the Lord as his savior.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Patricia (Pat); daughters, Peggy Smith (Morris), Denna Hoey (Marvin), Monique Davis-Hoey (Tim); stepdaughters, Tonia Moore (Mark), Carol Behling (Tyrone); stepson Lennard (Shekenithia); grandchildren, Tiffanie, Ebone', Will, Chris, Crystal, Cameron, and Brandon; step-grandchildren, Keira, Kamryn, Sierra, A. J. , Malik, Sakyia, Camya, and Caiden; great-grandchild, Brooke, Elaynie, Jordan, King, Dyllen, and Zahir; step-great-grandchildren, Ah'nayla, Lauren, Kayden; niece, Gina Polk; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Walker Hoey; siblings, Taylor Hoey, Jr. and Doris Polk-Clark (Lester); sons, Alphonso "Al" Hoey and William "Billy" Hoey, Jr. (Joann); and daughter, Barbara Hoey (Pee-Wee). He had many special life-long friends.
