Obituary

Willie Mae Blount, 80 of Charlotte, transitioned from this life into the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Atrium Health Pineville.  She was the first born of Queenie Mae Pulley and Junious Jones on June 10, 1941.  She was born in Washington D.C.  and has seven siblings:  Isabelle Bartley Gross, Abraham Bartley (deceased), William Bartley (deceased), Warren Stokes Bartley, Edmund Bartley (deceased), Elise Bartley and LaVern Bartley Moore (deceased).  Willie was born with sickle cell anemia which should have precluded her from having children, especially healthy ones.  Her life also should have been cut short by this merciless disease.  But God had a plan.  Although her days were not always easy, her faith and trust in God made the journey a joyful and triumphant one.  She exceeded the expectations of most of her doctors and left many shaking their heads in amazement that she was still alive and doing quite well.

Willie's mother was tragically struck and killed by a trolley car when she was only 12.  Shortly thereafter, she went to live with her grandparents (Ara and Ervin Pulley) in Spring Hope, North Carolina.  She graduated from Spaulding High School and went to North Carolina A&T University where she majored in education and met the "love of her life," Alonzo Blount.  They married shortly after graduation.

During her career she taught middle and high school students in New Jersey, North Carolina, and Ohio.  She taught physical education, English, and world history and eventually earned her Master of Education from the University of Dayton.  Throughout her career she earned the respect of students and colleagues alike.  Willie most notably landed on the front page of the Dayton Daily News when a student won an essay writing completion about her favorite teacher, Mrs. Willie Mae Blount.

Although Willie enjoyed teaching, traveling, and meeting new people, she considered her greatest honor and joy being a mother to Anthony and Angela.  She never met a stranger and loved the Lord with all of her heart.

Mr. Alonzo Blount, 79 of Matthews, passed away on Tuesday November 26, 2019 at Novant Health Presbyterian-Matthews.  He was born on September 18, 1940 in Washington, DC.  He was the only child of Haddie and Johnnie Mae Blount.  He earned his bachelor of science in engineering from North Carolina A&T University where he met Willie Mae Pulley.  They were married for 57 years.

Alonzo was enlisted in the United States Army as a second lieutenant.  After finishing his stint in the Army, Alonzo and Willie Mae made their home in Dayton, Ohio.  Alonzo was a civilian engineer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and they lived there for 30+ years.  In 2008, they moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina and relocated to Charlotte in December of 2017.

Alonzo loved to travel and the Blount family spent many summer vacations traveling across the United States in their Pace Arrow.  Alonzo and Willie Mae visited almost all 50 of the states via, car, camper, train and plane.  He also enjoyed photography and visiting Navy ships.  Upon retirement, Alonzo became quite busy as a handyman throughout the community.  He was the self-proclaimed, Dr. Al, Your Fix-it Pal who thoroughly enjoyed fixing and/or improving people's homes.  He will clearly be remembered for his loud laugh, love of food, music, dancing and family.

Although his latter years brought the challenge of dementia, he remained strong and God enabled him to remember his children and wife until he was called home on Tuesday, November 26, 2019.
