Yvonne Massey Harrington, affectionately known as Bonnie was born February 24, 1943 in Union County, North Carolina. She began her heavenly rest on January 28, 2020. Yvonne was the daughter of the late Ruby Morrow Benton and Eddie Massey Sr. She was a 1961 graduate of West Charlotte Senior High School. In 1963, Yvonne graduated number 2 in her class from Mecklenburg College with a degree in Secretarial Science. Yvonne worked for Mechanics and Farmers Bank for 48 ½ years. After 35 years of service she retired. Retirement did not last long, she returned to Mechanics and Farmers Bank and worked 13 ½ additional years. Yvonne managed budgets, ordered medications, scheduled medical appointments and made sure her customers paid their bills. At Mechanics and Farmers Bank, she was more than an employee, she was a personal assistant, financial advisor and friend.
Yvonne was a faithful member of Shiloh Institutional Baptist Church and served on several ministries. She was a former Trustee and member of the SHARE Program. Yvonne's financial expertise was instrumental in her success serving on the finance committee for over 20 years. Her favorite ministry was the Greeter's ministry. Yvonne was very happy when she was the recipient of the 2013 Greeter of the year award. Her smiling face would be one of the first sights upon your arrival on Sunday mornings. Yvonne's loving spirit and friendly demeanor made everyone feel welcome that was in presence. She was a supporter of ALL ministries in the church, regardless if she was a member of that ministry. Yvonne had a small frame but her love for the Lord and others was enormous. She would do ANYTHING she could to help you and she did it from her heart not for accolades.
A nurse asked Yvonne if she had any hobbies and she replied, "Yes shopping". Regardless to the weather conditions, every Saturday she was shopping. Yvonne knew the Charlotte Transit bus schedules like clockwork. In the 1960's Yvonne was on the number 7 bus to reach her shopping destinations, Belk's and Ivey's in downtown Charlotte. In 1970, SouthPark Mall opened and she was on the number 8 bus headed to the new mall. In 1975 a new opened. Yvonne would ride the number 10 bus to shop at Eastland Mall. Carolina Place opened in 1991, followed by Concord Mills in 1999 and Northlake Mall in 2005. Yvonne enjoyed shopping at all of these malls as well as other shopping venues, she LOVED shopping. When asked what her favorite mall of all times was, she said SouthPark Mall. SouthPark Mall is the largest mall in North Carolina with over 177 stores. In the 50 years that SouthPark has been opened, Yvonne completed an abundance of shopping from her favorite stores there Belk's, Dillard's, Macy's and Chico's. After retirement, Yvonne stopped riding the bus to the malls and started riding shotgun with her sisters and friends on her shopping excursions. She never had a driver's license but she was a human GPS, Yvonne KNEW her way on the roads.
