Zacharias Springs, Jr. loved life and lived it quietly in a Christian home. He was born June 27, 1941, the second child and first son born to devout Christian parents, the late Zacharias Alexander Springs, Sr. and Mrs. Ada Lucille Erwin Springs in rural Charlotte, North Carolina. He attended Plato Price High School (Grades 1-12) where he received the prestigious Civilian Award for good citizenship. Affectionately called "Bubba", "Bub" (a term of endearment) and "Mr. Zack" by former coworkers, he had a jovial personality and the handsome looks of his father. He often left us in stitches with his sense of humor. Christmases were always magically created by our loving and devoted parents. More, magical than Disney Magic. Zack, Jr. would shake every wrapped gift placed under the tree and probably told you what you had! Sometimes the gift was shaken by your ear so you too could affirm his belief. On one occasion, what he thought was a puzzle turned out to be a shirt moving back and forth in the box. "The body has a shelf life but the soul does not." Zack's Christian journey began at age 10 when he and sister Nancy joined the Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Harvey O. Graham. His early childhood was spent in rural Mecklenburg County with parents and seven siblings. In Zack, we saw the love of Church when he attended Moore's Sanctuary A.M.E. Zion Methodist Church in the neighborhood for Vacation Bible School when transportation posed a problem to attend his church. He transferred his membership to H.O. Graham Metropolitan Presbyterian Church. He was instrumental in bringing success to the Zacharias A. Springs Sr. Penny Ministry, a cause to help alleviate hunger in the community. He was active in the Men's Presbyterian Organization. Zack Jr. married his sweetheart, Elna Bernice Robinson and to this union, two beautiful daughters were born. In Zack, we saw a deep love of family. He was a most compassionate and caring husband and father who loved unconditionally. He was so "Proud" of his family. He leaves a legacy of love for his family, friends and those he associated. He always exhibited a sincere compassion for and dedicated to those less fortunate; generously giving to local causes. His life epitomized love, compassion, patience, kindness, forgiveness, commitment, tolerance, acceptance, humility, honesty, generosity, integrity, faithfulness and fairness. For 81 wonderful years, he gave the world his gift of these virtues while being kind and gentle and soft spoken like his mother. "Those who mourn, they will be comforted" Matthew 5:4 Always participating in family gatherings, Zack offered a helping hand when and where it was needed. As a team player, in it for the short or long haul, he served as a caregiver (for a period staying at night) for his parents. His support was poured out to his other departed siblings. "How noble of him to do so? " He cared for his beloved and talented wife Elna, embracing the positive aspects of caregiving, companionship, meaningful activities and conversation laced with humor. Zack must have done what Paul calls: "Carry Each Other's Burdens and in This Way, You Will Fulfill the Law of Christ." Galatians 6:2 His job affiliations were: Park-n-Shop, Harris Teeter, Terrell Machinery Shop and CVS (Wilkinson Blvd) where he served as "Greeter" or "Ambassador," if you please. He greeted customers with love and respect as he became the recipient of that same love and respect. Bud was an avid golfer, having directed the ZA Springs, Sr. Invitational Gold Tournament in Charlotte for many years. Its purpose was to provide scholarships to deserving students in the area. Well versed in sports news, especially Tiger Woods gave pause to Zack to drum-up conversation. Bud endeared himself to his nieces and nephews and was often referred to as "Favorite Uncle." He engaged in "talks" and played games of Scrabble and Checkers. The door to his family's home was welcoming to family/friends for game time and hospitality. Zack, a fan of desserts, enjoyed his sister Nancy's pound cakes and sweet potato pies. When he requested, she delivered, especially on his birthday. His life journey ended peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 surrounded by his daughters on a sunny day.
Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Elna Bernice Robinson Springs; his parents; his brother, Thomas and sisters, Edna Springs Laney and Evelyn Ann Springs.
He leaves to cherish the memories of a fruitful life daughters, Yeletta Springs Whitaker, Lydia Springs; loving brothers, Erwin Springs, Sr. (Geraldine), Jerry Springs (Brenda) of Detroit Michigan; his loving sisters, Nancy Springs Morris (Lloyd B.) of Charlotte, NC, Debbie Springs Woodson (Mark) of Greenville, NC; aunt, Mrs. Mildred Springs Ingram of Charlotte, NC; sisters-in-law, Janet Lyles Springs, Lucilla Robinson, Brenda Dye, LaVerne Nyagbona; brother-in-law, James Robinson; nieces (including a special cousin, Mary Reid of Tampa, Florida); nephews, many cousins and friends.
