Tonya Amerrylis Carroll, wife Dr. Curtis Carroll, of Charlotte, NC, departed this earthly life to enter eternity with our Lord and Savior, on Friday, June 28, 2019.
Born June 28, 1962 in Flint, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Lenord Lowe and Bernice Lowe of Flint, Michigan.
Tonya graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1980 where she was the first state champion hurdler in the school's history. Her athletic accomplishments led to a full track and field scholarship at the University of Kentucky. A gifted athlete, she was honored as a two-time All-American and awarded Southeast Conference Woman of the Year in 1984. Also, in 1984, Tonya competed in the Olympic trials held in Los Angeles, California where she finished in the top six for hurdles.
Not only did Tonya excel in track and field, she also performed well academically. In the fall of 1986, she received her degree in Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky.
Tony has been recognized for numerous accomplishments: she was inducted into the Greater Flint Area African American Sports Hall of Fame (2004) and the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame (2016).
Tonya married high school sweetheart, Curtis, on August 29, 1987; this union remained strong for over 31 years. They had two children, Brittany and Brent, both of whom received scholarships in track and field. Brittany followed her mother's career path and earned a Doctorate Degree in Pharmacy in 2017 from the University of Findlay. Brent is following a similar educational path in the medical field pursing a degree in Health System Management at UNC Charlotte.
Tonya was a Pharmacist for over 30 years and previously owned the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy formally located on West Boulevard in Charlotte, NC. Her lifelong dream was to own a pharmacy in an underserved area to assist the minority community. She was previously employed by a host of pharmacies in Michigan, Illinois, and most recently at Atrium Health and Walmart Pharmacy in Charlotte, NC.
Tony loved fishing, coaching young athletes and fixing puzzles; however, Tonya's greatest love was helping others. A woman of unwavering faith, Tonya studied the Word, lived by God's teachings and served as a prayer warrior for many.
Tonya leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Dr. Curtis Carroll; her children, Brittany and Brent; her mother, Bernice Lowe; five brothers, Marlon (Rhonda) of Flint, MI, Jackie, Jeffery and Ivan (Natalie) of Charlotte, NC Daryl (Debra) of Sacramento, CA, and her dear sister, Tammie (Henry) Eggleston of Fenton, MI, a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives, including her special Aunt Betty Randle of Cruger, MS.
In addition, the family has established a Susan G. Komen fundraiser in Tonya's honor to continue her legacy to fight breast cancer.
